RESPONSIBILITIES
OF STUDENTS, PARENTS, AND
COUNSELOR
Student Responsibilities:
Begin process of selection early
Attend
and keep a file of all large group guidance handouts
Use resources in College Guidance Office
Check the college bulletin board regularly for information, updates, and meeting times.
Fill out third academic biographical questionnaire; ask a friend to complete peer reference forms
Attend at least two (2) meetings with Mrs. Birtel
Be aware of grades, strengths, and weaknesses
Secure information about deadlines and special requirements for standardized
testing
Ask teachers for letters of recommendation
Be aware of college fairs in the New Orleans area
Talk with parents about their expectations, your desires, financial considerations,
etc.
Obtain a Social Security Number if you do not already have one
Write follow up letters and thank you notes after college interviews and meetings
with college representatives
Update Mrs. Birtel on summer activities, awards, and accomplishments
Let Mrs. Birtel know your schedule for college interviews
Read college guidance updates that are mailed home
Parent Responsibilities:
Discuss future plans, including the financial picture and any restrictions, with
your daughter early in the selection process
Be aware of deadlines
Keep records of everything; phone calls, names, meetings, etc.
Call the college counselor with any questions
Check with your daughter periodically about college bulletins or other information
distributed in the school
Start thinking of college visits for you and your daughter (Spring Break &
Summer)
Read college guidance updates that are mailed home
College Guidance Office Responsibilities:
Discuss college plans with the student
Provide information regarding admissions
Provide opportunities to learn about various colleges
Publicize college visitations, special events, open houses and scholarships
Provide certain applications and forms
Provide applications for some colleges and universities
Provide SAT I, SAT II Subject Tests and ACT registration forms
Provide Financial Aid forms
Provide Special scholarship applications
Prepare transcript and recommendation letter for each student
Update information about the student; honors, awards, special considerations
Send semester and final grade reports to colleges
Provide supporting documents; transcripts, school profile, course descriptions and grading system
