Science
Mrs. Lisa Katz
In nursery and pre-kindergarten, science is taught by the classroom teachers and integrated into the academic program by way of their instructional themes. During their Under the Sea unit, the nursery girls completed a “sink and float” experiment; they discussed and observed “dissection” during their Apple unit. During their All About Me unit, the pre-kindergarten girls cracked brown eggs and white eggs demonstrating that both are the same on the inside, and when studying My Five Senses, they conducted a “taste test” of sweet, salty, bitter, and sour foods.
In kindergarten, the science specialist meets with the girls once per week to conduct hands-on science experiments with the students. The topics often reflect the major instructional themes being taught by the classroom teachers. For example, while the girls were studying the letter A, the science experiments centered on the concept of absorption.
