First Grade

Happy November!

This month we are finishing our study of Eric Carle.  We have read many of his books, learned about his life, and will create our own illustrations using his artistic techniques.  We are busy working on our doghouse for the auction.  The girls are finished decorating the doghouse, so be on the lookout for our class donation at the Auction on November 15th!  Thanks to all the moms for a job well done!

In language arts we will start the second Explode the Code book which continues the short vowel sounds with consonant blends. At home, please continue pointing out all of the short vowel words when reading with your daughter.

A reminder: Please help your child to completely fill out the reading log and return it on Friday.  We love reading your comments, which are an important part of our homework program.

The first graders had a great time learning all about insects and creepy crawly creatures.  This month we will begin working on map skills in our geography workbook.  We will also begin a social studies unit on Thanksgiving traditions, pilgrims and Native Americans.

Our class enjoyed using their pumpkins to learn all about weight and circumference.  This month we will begin Popcorn Math, which will have more measurement and graphing activities.  Please continue to review the addition facts.

A school wide clothing drive has started to help the New Orleans Mission. You may donate gently used clothing, shoes, etc. from now until November 7th.
