Care of CDs and DVDs

  • Handle the disc only by the outer edge or center hole to prevent fingerprints and smears on the surface.
  • Store the disc in a protective case. Plastic cases are better than paper sleeves.
  • Do not write on the surface of the disc with a pencil or pen.  Use a felt tip or sharpie to label CDs.
  • Do not leave the disc in direct sunlight or in a hot, humid environment.
  • To clean the disc use a soft, lint-free cloth to remove spots, dust or fingerprints.   Gently wipe from the center to the outside edge and never wipe in a circular motion.

Things to remember:

  • A scratch can damage the disc and destroy data
  • Food, liquids and fingerprints can make the disc unreadable
  • Heat can warp a disc
