Student Activities
New Orleans Museum of Art
The entire Prep division visited the New Orleans
Museum of Art this month. They participated in guided tours to view the
Disney exhibit,
Dreams Come True:
Art of the Classic Fairy Tales from the Walt Disney Studio.
The exhibit featured more than 600 works of art from classic Disney
features and introduced pieces from the upcoming film,
The Princess and The Frog,
which is set in New Orleans. Students
enjoyed a picnic lunch in City Park before returning to school
Louisiana
Renaissance Festival
The 3rd Prep class
traveled to Hammond to attend the Louisiana Renaissance Festival. Students
enjoyed presentations focused on juggling, candle making, Shakespeare, tool
making, falconry and jousting. It was a beautiful fall day and students were
taken back in time by the Renaissance performers, music, food, games and
products. Their experiences will be helpful as they begin their medieval
focus in language arts.
Mix it Up Day
The
Middle School took part in Mix it Up at Lunch Day. This national event
works to celebrate diversity and breaking down social barriers. Over 3000
schools from all over the country participated this year. A fun time was
had by all ASH students, as they were given a card and asked to picnic with
other middle school students and teachers with matching cards. It was a
wonderful opportunity to spend time talking and playing together in the
courtyard at the close of exams.
Hearty Helpers
Students
at Sacred Heart
Middle School often
participate in activities that benefit the community.
Hearty Helpers is a monthly effort in which students
bring in items to donate to the Metropolitan Center for
Women and Children.
Over the past 6 months, students have collected
books, art supplies, playground equipment, paper products, cleaning supplies and
toiletries.
This month students will be collecting scissors and glue
for the children at the shelter.
This
activity fosters an awareness in our middle school students and encourages them
to actively live out Goal.

Peace Week
The Middle School celebrated Peace
Week in January.
Students and teachers were encouraged to
participate in community events on Monday to make it a “day on, not a day off,”
in observation of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
At school, students participated in a variety of
activities to promote peace.
Origami paper and yarn were made available to
students who wanted to create peace cranes and friendship bracelets.
Students watched the inauguration together and
mixed it up at lunch, by sitting with students from other grades and playing
games.
A peace wall was constructed in the new wing, where
students could stop by and write messages of peace and friendship for others to
enjoy. The week concluded with a King Cake party for students.
The student council
distributed pieces of king cake and collected donations for the
Twomey
Center
for Peace Through Justice at Loyola
University.
Donations will be used to
purchase training materials for conflict-resolution programs, benefiting
teachers and students in the
New Orleans
area.
