~~~~~WELCOME TO MRS. LEE'S AND MS. DEFFES' PAGE~~~~~
Each year, the 7th grade studies To Kill A Mockingbird for the first trimester. This is a comprehensive study of the novel. As part of the unit, we do art work to help the students deal with abstract ideas. The assignment is to pick symbols, motifs, and/or themes, and illustrate them in paintings.
This year was the 50th anniversary of Harper Lee's novel, and the art show was more elaborate than usual, covering the entire Assembly Room, and the 8th grade was allowed to participate as well. The paintings were interspersed on the branches of a tree which covered the walls.
Norse Trees of Life
In the 3rd Prep, students study Norse
mythology using the book Nordic Gods and Heroes. Ygdrassil, the Tree of Life, is
the basis of the world of the Norse Gods, Giants, and Heroes. The students
depict this tree and other stories from the mythology in a pencil sketch. Before
doing the picture, we look at examples of Viking art to add authenticity. This
unit also explores the connections between Norse mythology and Greek, Roman,
Egyptian and Arthurian mythology and explains the influence that the Nordic
tales had on fairy tales and modern novels such as the Lord of the Rings trilogy
and the Harry Potter series.
Louisiana Projects
The Third Prepartory
Louisiana Projects are the culmination of the year's worth of expository writing
practice as well as the reinforcement of proper researching skills emphasized
throughout Middle School. Creativity and originality are illustrated in the
projects that inhabit Rosary Hall each spring. The students, who are studying
Louisiana History at this time of year, choose a topic to research from the wide
variety of sources our state offers. They write and edit a research paper and
then create a unique, three-dimensional representation of their topic which they
discuss in an oral presentation to the rest of their class. The Louisiana
Projects allows the students to be creative while also developing their
researching, writing, editing and presentation skills.
